Never Did I Think.....

...that breathing could be so interesting! What I am talking about is the breathing system. You would never guess how complex it is when you take just one breath!A kid can take about 18 breaths a minute. If there are 1440 minutes in a day,and you are 12 years old,you have averaged about 111,974,400 breaths in your whole life! Amazing! But for now, let's talk about the different parts of the respiratory system.

In this post I will talk about many things related to the lungs and what they do to help the body, but I will start with the lungs themselves. Have you ever seen a picture of lungs before? If you have that is good because as I explain, you will know what I am talking about.
First off, there is one long tube starting from your voice box,(I will talk about that in a moment)all the way down to your lungs. That tube is called the Trachea, your air tube. If you start to feel with your hand, in the middle of your neck, you will feel the rings of cartilage.(Kind of a funny feeling isn't it?!)Without these rings your trachea would collapse, allowing no air to pass through! Talk about being thankful for the little things in life! :p
Let's go down the tube a bit. You will soon come to your lungs, the most vital part of the whole process. There the trachea goes in between the lungs then it branches out into the lungs. These branches are called the bronchi. Have you ever had bronchitis? That is when your bronchi get swollen and inflamed, and you cough a whole lot. Boy! that hurts.
Next, we will talk about bronchioles(mini bronchi), and alveoli. After the bronchi branches out, they become little bronchiole tubes. And in those bronchiole tubes we find little alveoli. Try to say that 5 times fast! I get tongue tied! Did you know you have about 600 alveoli in your two lungs? And I just thought there was air in there! And get this! It says in the text book,"Remember how we said the trachea branches into something that looks like an upside down tree? Well, the alveoli are like little berries at the very end of each branch."
Now we are going to climb all the way back up the trachea towards your voice box. But the scientific word for 'voice box' is the Larnyx. And stretched over the Larnyx are things called your vocal chords, otherwise known as your speaking strings. Here's an example. If you have a guitar, pluck one of the strings. Do you here that sound? That is similar to what your vocal chords and larnyx does. Pretty cool huh?! When you hear a man's voice and a woman's voice, the woman's voice is higher than the man's. But why? Well, listen to this. A woman's vocal chords are shorter and thinner, while a man's vocal chords are longer and thicker. WOW!
Now let's talk about the terrible affects of one thing. The most dreaded, fearless, scary, the most bad for you, the one and only....Cigarette! Oh, Yes! This thing is full of toxic things that destroy your health. Let's see, cigarettes cause, Lung cancer, addiction, high blood pressure, and it also destroys your lungs. I will never in my life, smoke a cigarette! I have learned that when you smoke, you ruin your voice. Sometimes I will be out in public, and I will see someone smoking. When I listen to those smokers' voices, I ask myself,"Is it really worth all the trouble of health problems, to have a little pleasure in smoking?"
Why did I say that it ruins your voice to smoke? Well I have created a hypothesis. When you talk, air passes over your Larnyx(voice box). Therefore producing the sound you hear when you talk. But when there is smoke in your lungs, smoke will pass over your larnyx producing a terrible sound!
After reading and studying about all of these things, I desire to always lead a happy healthy life. Don't you?!
Well, so long for now!

  3. Wow! And even in all of those details and facts, we can see how detailed God is. He created us so carefully, its amazing how the human body functions.:)
