An Incredibly Complex System: The Cell

Dear Readers:
Just recently I started studying the cell. Before I started to study it I thought it was just another part in the body. But no! When I dug deep, the cell is actually a whole lot more! Let me tell you about this amazing machine!
I will begin with the cell membrane. Before anything enters the cell it has to pass through the cell membrane. (If you were to pull up a picture of a cell on the internet, you would be able to see the membrane.) The cell membrane serves as a "gatekeeper". It only allows things like water, oxygen, and nutrients inside the cell. If something foreign tries to enter through the membrane, it(membrane) will not let it enter. Throughout the membrane are little pieces called organelles. Organelles are little organs.
Enough talk about the membrane, let's get inside the cell! Let's talk about the "Mighty" Mitochondria! The mitochondria is like a power plant for the whole cell. The cell has many mitochondrias actually! These powerplants look alot like beans, with squiggly lines through them. Where does the mitochondria get its fuel to keep the cell going? Well, when you body digests the food you eat, the cell takes some of it and breaks it down into the proper fuel for the mitochondria. When the cell has finished breaking it all down, it sends this new fuel to all of the mitochondrias that are in that particular cell. This will fill up the "gas tanks" of the mitochondria to give it energy for more work. Ins the mitochondria there are little fires burning. They are not really burning!:o) It burns a sugar that is called glucose.
The "Policemen of your cell are also important! These "policemen" are called lysosomes. They destroy invaders such as unwanted bacteria that sneaks past the cell membrane. Now aren't you glad we have lysosomes! Lysosomes also help to take apart the old organelles, and they send them out of the cell membrane. They also take the chemicals that you get from things such as meat and potatoes(which are carbohydrates) and they use them.
Now let's talk about the grocery store of the cell. This is the Golgi Body. Strange word isn't it? These Golgi bodies look like different stacks of curved pancakes. This "Grocery store" stores the different chemicals that are needed throughout the cell. Like the chemicals that are made by the lysosomes. When a chemical is needed somewhere in the cell, the golgi body sends it to the certain place. Pretty fascinating!
The UPS is what's up next! Don't you get excited when a package comes in the mail, containing all of the items that you ordered or received from someone? The next cell part I'm talking about is the endoplasmic reticulum. My Science book told me to try to say that three times fast, can you? I can't! When I refer to it I will refer to it as the ER. The ER transports things around the cell, just like your delivery truck transports things around your city. The ER serves as the so called "garbage man"! It will send unwanted chemicals outside the cell just like you take the trash out side!
The centurions, no, the centrioles are the next in line!:o) Imagine breaking a bone. It hurts pretty bad doesn't it? Well, when you do break a bone you crush dozens of teensy cells. The Centrioles help to reproduce the cells needed for that broken area of the body. Isn't that handy! I'm sure glad we have those "Mothers of the city"!
The last of them all,.......the nucleus. This part of your cell is larger than any other part out there! It also serves as the government of the cell. Outside of this nucleus is a nucleus membrane which helps to give the nucleus shape. This membrane is porous. To let substances in and out. The DNA and the RNA are found inside this part, as well as the nucleolus. The nucleolus is what makes the ribosomes that you can find in the ER. The DNA is like an entire book about you! It contains: how tall you are going to be, your hair color, eye color, so on and so forth. Every single thing! Isn't that amazing? Inside every single cell!
I just gave you a really, really, simplified version of a cell. Isn't God magnificent?
We really are fearfully and wonderfully made!
