Some more interesting facts!

Our dog Dixie!

I've been studying Georgia History again and found some more interesting facts.

The Brown Thrasher (our state bird) is a relative of the mockingbird. It is the only Brown Thrasher found east of the Mississippi. It is just about a foot long from it's beak to it's tail.It is a rusty brown color on top with a black streaking underneath. The Thrasher can be seen in the south all year. It is most seen in the southern and middle regions of Georgia. It is seen less in the Appalachian mountains. It became our state bird in 1935. And it was officially adopted by the legislature in 1970.

The Cherokee Rose is a beautiful shrub that has waxy white petals with a gold center. Its scientific name is Rosa sinica or China rose. It was adopted as the state flower in 1916. One legend of the Cherokee Rose is that it was created because if the trail of tears, when the Cherokee Indians had to leave Georgia. The white in the petals stand for the tears the women wept and the gold center stands for the gold found on Cherokee land in Georgia. And the seven petals stand for the seven Cherokee clans. This rose can be found as far away as Indiana and Kansas.

On March 7, 1979 Ray Charles sang our state song "Georgia on my Mind" for the state legislature. It was written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell And was published in 1930. It is now our state song.

What are you learning in school?
