Funny Facts!!
Here are a few facts I learned in Georgia history.
The word that has been used for many years to describe poorly educated whites is the word cracker. The word comes from Scots-Irish herdsmen that cracked their whips to control their herds. City people looked down on such people. In Britain A cracker was a frontiersmen who was looked down upon as a noisy boasting fellow.
The term redneck is also from the Scots. In 1640 Scotsmen who wanted their state church to be Presbyterian, not the Church of England signed petitions with their blood requesting this. Many of them wore red cloth around their necks as a symbol of their desire. England called such dissenters rednecks. Today a redneck is a put down word for people who are not well educated.
In the conflict between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland in the late 1600's supporters of protestant King William were called billy boys. When the Scots-Irish protestants moved into the Appalachian mountain region they were soon called the hillbillies.
Hope you enjoyed this little bit of my Georgia History lesson!!
